Have questions about couples therapy?
Who can benefit from couples therapy?
Couples therapy is for any partners who want to strengthen their relationship, whether you're dating, engaged, married, or in a long-term partnership. It can help if you're facing communication challenges, trust issues, intimacy concerns, or feeling emotionally disconnected. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit; many couples use therapy as a proactive way to grow closer, navigate transitions, and build a healthier, more resilient connection.
How long does couples therapy usually last?
The length of couples therapy varies depending on your unique goals and challenges. Some couples find meaningful progress in just a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over several months or longer. Typically, sessions are weekly or biweekly and last about 50 minutes. During therapy, we regularly check in to assess your progress and adjust the pace to best support your healing and growth together.
Does couples therapy work as well online?
Yes. Working by secure video removes the two things that most often stop couples starting: coordinating two schedules around a commute, and finding childcare. Many couples find it easier to be honest from their own living room than in an unfamiliar office, and sessions are available anywhere in British Columbia. If you would rather meet in person, the Langley office is there for that.
What if one or both of us is carrying trauma?
That is common, and it shapes how the work is done rather than ruling it out. Trauma tends to show up in a relationship as reactions that feel out of proportion to what just happened: shutting down, bracing for conflict, or losing trust faster than the situation warrants. Sessions move at a pace you both set, and EMDR can be brought in where past experiences are still driving the present pattern.
How often should we attend couples therapy?
Most couples start with weekly sessions to build momentum and create a consistent space for healing and growth. As progress is made, sessions may shift to every other week or monthly to maintain the gains and continue strengthening your relationship. Ultimately, the frequency is tailored to your needs and schedule, ensuring therapy fits your life while providing effective support.
